Vivian Alamain came to Salem in 1992. Vivian was Lawrence's paternal Aunt and she ran and owned half of Alamain Industries.

When John Black began searching for his true family, Vivian Alamain recognized the piece of locket that John had in his possession as being the second half of a locket that Lawrence's mother gave her two children. Vivian and Lawrence had the coffin of Lawrence's younger brother, Forrest, exhumed and sent to Salem. When they opened the coffin they were shocked to see it full of sand. Vivian and Lawrence realized that if John was really Forrest Alamain, then he would have the right to claim half of the Alamain Empire as his own. Up until now, Vivian had been running the half which rightfully belonged to Forrest Alamain. Lawrence and Vivian had decided to keep this a secret, but things changed. Carrie Brady had become smitten with Lawrence and had planted herself on his bed. When John learned what Carrie was about to do, he charged into Lawrence's house and ordered Lawrence at gunpoint to leave Carrie alone. Panicked, Lawrence shouted "You wouldn't kill your own brother would you?" Lawrence confessed everything to him and a DNA test proved that he was Forrest Alamain. When Victor told John that legally he owned half of Alamain Industries, John took over and forced his Aunt Vivian out on her butt. Vivian was furious that she had lost everything.

Later that year, Vivian Alamain brought her adopted son Nikki to the US. Lisanne Gardner did some snooping and eventually learned that Nikki was Lawrence and Carly's son that Vivian had stolen. Lisanne began to blackmail Vivian, but the two ended up in an argument. Nikki came home and saw Vivian falling to the floor and thought that Lisanne was hurting his aunt, who was really having heart problems. Nikki pushes Lisanne away from his Aunt and she fell, striking her head on a stone cat, which killed her. Nikki never knew he killed Lisanne.

Lawrence soon learned that Nikki was his son by Carly Manning. Lawrence verbally attacked Vivian, who had a heart attack as a result. Lawrence told Carly about Nikki and the two discussed their options. First they both agreed to protect Nikki from knowing that he had killed Lisanne Gardner. They told Nikki right away that Lawrence was his father, but they didn't tell him Carly was his mother. When Carly and Nikki began to bond, Vivian panicked and tried to flee Salem with Nikki. Lawrence then burst into Bo and Carly's wedding and announced that Vivian had run off with their son Nikki. Bo eventually caught Nikki and Vivian before they could leave the country.

Vivian had been seeing Victor Kiriakis, but when he learned that she had kept Carly's child from her, Victor broke it off with Vivian.

In 1993, Vivian learned that she had been diagnosed with a fatal heart disease. If Vivian could not have Nikki then she didn't want Carly to have him, so she set out to frame Carly for trying to kill her.

Vivian enlisted the aid of Dr. Wu, who gave her some herbs that would make Carly Manning very agitated and angry. Vivian spiked Carly's drinks with them several times in order to provoke her. At an evening at the Penthouse Grill, Vivian agitated Carly out on the terrace and Vivian lept off it. Vivian claimed Carly pushed her, but Victor Kiriakis saw Vivian jump. Not only was Vivian's plan ruined, but she was paralyzed from the waist down as a result. In the hospital, Vivian enlisted Dr. Wu once again for some herbs that would allow her to walk again. Unfortunately, the herbs also made her a tad crazy. Vivian decided to have Carly arrested for putting some of her patients out of their misery. Vivian began injecting Carly's patients with cleaning fluid. Vivian's plan worked and Carly came under suspicion for murdering her patients. When Vivian attempted to kill Caroline Brady, who had suffered another heart attack, Vivian found her and the two fought. Carly ended up falling on the needle and was injected with the cleaning fluid. Carly fell into a coma and the police believed that she was trying to kill Caroline, but ended up injecting herself. Later, Vivian spiked Carly's IV with some herbs which made her appear dead, but she wasn't. Vivian had Carly buried in a special coffin which not only featured some lights and an air tank, but a two way speaker phone on which Vivian could talk to Carly. Eventually Carly's air began to run out. Vivian, who was home from the hospital, was weaned off the herbs she was talking because she was now able to walk on her own. When she realized what she had done, Vivian told Lawrence, who dug Carly up. Lawrence wanted to take Carly to the hospital, but Vivian told her that the hospital could do nothing to her because of the herbs. Vivian called Dr. Wu, who treated Carly. When Carly came to she had no idea who Nikki or Bo was and she believed Lawrence to be James, the man she fell in love with before learning who Lawrence really was. When Carly eventually recalled everything, Vivian was sent to an insane asylum.

At the asylum, Vivian saw that Kate Roberts came to visit a patient. Vivian, who still loved Victor, was looking for a way to split up Kate and Victor. When Vivian learned that Kate had been visiting Laura Horton, Vivian decides to find out what Laura knew about Kate.

Victor had no idea that he and Vivian had actually married. When it came time for Victor to marry Kate, Vivian went in to labor and gave birth to Phillip Kiriakis. As a thank you present for carrying their child, Victor and Kate had Vivian's mansion totally re-furnished. Vivian wasn't pleased and she burned it to the ground, forcing Victor and Kate to let her move into the Kiriakis mansion. Kate managed to find the marriage certificate of Vivian and Victor's "rehearsal" wedding as well as a copy of it on a VHS cassette. Kate moved in with Marlena Evans Brady for a short period of time. Unfortunately for Vivian, Kate learned that she controlled 50% of Titan and owned 50% of Victor's assets because she was Phillips mom, so she moved back in.

Stefano forced Vivian and Ivan to help him flee Salem, which caused the police to come down on Vivian and Ivan. Vivian and Ivan fled the country and went to Paris. After spotting Stefano in Paris, Vivian thought that if she got Stefano to sign an avidavid exonerating her from willingly aiding him, she could return to Salem. Eventually, Vivian and Ivan were caught and were thrown in jail for a few days because of their involvement with Stefano, but Kate managed to use connections to keep them in prison for much much longer. Kristen covered by saying she had found papers of Peter's saying he wished to be cremated. Laura went over to confront Kristen and ended up breaking down, thanks to being over medicated by Lynn and Kristen.

While walking back to her convent, Sister Mary was accosted by Vivian and Ivan, who were convinced that she was Susan. When Sister Mary informed them she was Susan's twin sister, she forced them to perform penance by scrubbing the floors of the convent. In exchange for doing this, Sister Mary promised not to turn them into the police.

Stefano returned to Salem and forced Vivian and Ivan to help him kidnap Marlena. Susan planned an Elvis themed wedding for herself and John, which Vivian and Ivan were forced to participate in. Time was of the essence because Jonsey was not a well man and Vivian learned from Dr. Wu that Jonsey could die any minute.

Jonsey told Vivian he wanted to be married in his ancestral homeland, so Jonsey, Vivian, and Ivan went to England. Unfortunately, Jonsey's homeland was where Susan was hiding out. Susan and Vivian came face to face and screamed. Eventually, Vivian convinced Susan that she was not here to steal Elvis, but to marry Jonsey.
